Siam Square

Opened: October 2008

The best way to spark a heated debate isn't to inquire after someone's political affiliations. Simply ask a group of foodies where to find the best Thai in town, and let 'er rip. While Siam Square may not be the best Thai in town (though there are many who swear it is), it has filled a void for downtown-dwellers and lunch-goers craving creamy curries and zippy stir-fries. Ed Rudisell and his wife, Sasathorn, who is from Thailand, weren't even sure they were going to serve Thai food when they began looking for a restaurant space in the summer of 2008. "Ethnic food is very difficult to do correctly," says Rudisell, but after securing chef Chutikan Souvannachack, who brings with her 15 years of restaurant experience in Bangkok, the rest fell into place for the Fountain Square eatery. The clean and bright interior has a touch more polish than many ethnic restaurants, and some of the dishes, like the pa ram long song—chicken breast atop spinach and broccoli with panang-style curry sauce—are difficult to find on many other Thai restaurant menus. Though the wine list offers some great deals, make sure your meal includes a tall, cool glass of Thai iced tea, topped with cream to quell the tastebuds after a fiery bite of curry.

Bottom line: This hip Thai joint fits in well with the other destination restaurants in Fountain Square.
